The Morning Pages

The “Morning Pages” is a key creative practice presented in “The Artist’s Way,” a book by Julia Cameron. This practice is designed to help individuals tap into their creativity, overcome creative blocks, and unleash their artistic and imaginative potential. Morning Pages are essentially daily journaling exercises with specific guidelines:

Timing: Morning Pages are typically written in the morning, as the name suggests, shortly after waking up. This is because the mind is often in a more unfiltered and creative state during this time.

Quantity: Write three pages of longhand, stream-of-consciousness writing. A small composition book used for students is a good size. This helps you push through mental clutter and resistance, to arrive at your creative moments. Do the right amount for you, enough but not so much that it becomes overwhelming.

No Censorship: There is no need to worry about grammar, spelling, or writing style. Put the inner critic aside by telling them, you are too busy writing to listen. The goal is to write without censoring yourself. If you don’t know what to write, just write about anything you see from where you are sitting, a lamp shade or out the window.

Private and Nonjudgmental: Morning Pages are meant to be entirely private. They are not for sharing or critique because it’s a space to be honest with yourself, express your thoughts and feelings, and work through any creative blocks or anxieties.

Unfiltered Expression: You can write about anything that comes to mind. This might include your dreams, worries, plans, or even complaints. The key is to allow your thoughts to flow freely without judgment.

The Morning Pages exercise serves several purposes:

Writing Morning Pages helps clear your mind of distractions, worries, and negative self-talk or any and all ways your mind will try to block your process. Write all this rubbish down as it comes up and by putting these thoughts on paper, you create space for creativity to flourish.

Over time, you may notice recurring themes or concerns in your Morning Pages. This self-awareness can help you address issues in your life or creative process. This is a place to work through your stuff.

Many people find that Morning Pages help them overcome creative blocks. It’s a way to prime the pump and get ideas flowing and to once again reach that creative feeling that drives your deepest imagination.

Morning Pages naturally encourage introspection and self-reflection, which can lead to personal growth and insight.

Writing consistently every day and without self-judgment increases your confidence as a creative and imaginative person.  It reinforces the idea that it’s okay to make mistakes, that creativity is a process and you will always be surprised by what comes forth from your process.

Please consider making your Morning Pages a daily habit, ideally writing them first thing in the morning upon waking, before engaging with the outside world. We will have 11 weeks to establish creativity as an important part of your life. Over time, the Morning Pages become an integral part of your creative process and a valuable tool for self-discovery, artistic growth and your study of the Human Design System.
